True, and many employers are starting to recognize the relationship. My concern is that if we don't legitimize our society as we go we could end up like some other countries who have pretty good constitutions that don't reflect the reality of their society at all.

Any two entities can form a legally binding relationship through contracting. Many modern marriages are no more than that. However, what would it hurt to make 'civil unions' a legitimate route to go. Even some none traditional heterosexuals could chose that route. The wheat and the chaffe get separated, at least on paper.
