As for the question could we have contained Iraq - Well yes we could have at least for a time, but in the meantime the Iraqi people would still be suffering with Saddam and sanctions and the war might have only been delayed.

You seem to ignore the fact that Saddam might have imploded under his own weight, or the Iraqis may have revolted successfully. It would not be the first time a dictator has gone one of those two routes. Corrupted individuals tend to bring about their own undoing.

No one can know what would have happened had we not attacked. We can only speculate.

I suppose babies weren't around when Saddam had the Kurd's villages gassed, or when he shelled and strafed the Shias in the south,

I am not going to defend this man, but if you look into american history you will find examples of equally ghastly crimes. Ask the American Indians or blacks during slavery. Today of course we say that these acts were part of the natural evolution and history of our nation. That took 200+ years...we expect to change Iraq in a couple. ||It's romantic nonsense. |

or when he had his government take control of most of the wealth of Iraq and spend a large part of it on things like weapons and palaces rather then food and medicine.

I will not defend saddam, but I will remind you that the medicines you loosely refer were caught by the same sanctions that considered many of them dual use materials.
