Well, I think that people forgot that the Soviets were our allies in WWII, when it was ok to like them. People who expressed favorable views before that time may have been doing so in the context of that relationship. It was only post-WWII that the Soviets became our hated enemies. Much of what McCarthy dredged up was circa 1945 and before ("are you or were you ever a member of the Communist party?").

So, McClellan had to resign in '53, but did ultimately find work again in '61. A long time to go without food on the table. Once again proving that McCarthy was indeed evil. The evilness consumed him, and he died a deluded alcoholic. Guess that's what they call Karma, eh?

Can you imagine being in in court in front of Judge Coulter being accused of being a traitor because you questioned GW Bush. You want to save your life but when she asks "Do you love your country?" and you answer "Yes", she tells you to prove it. How do you prove it? Once you've criticized Bush you cannot be vindicated. Even if you're a war hero with three Purple Hearts. You would be found guilty.

Love of country is one of those things you just cant prove, and we love the US in different ways, more or less, for different reasons. Coulter might have been at home in Saddam's government. Or the Taliban. Just the regimes she says she hates.
