Wilson is widely blamed for the party's precipitous decline in the state

I wonder who is "widely blaming" Wilson for republican demise in CA? Maybe the republicans currently in power here? (within their own party I mean)

The Wilson debacle happened at exactly the same time that the republicans adopted the family values platform and the far right social agenda, including a pro-life, anti-gay and pro-gun stance. Add the impeachment hearings in for good measure and that equals a deep seeded disgust that socially liberal california has for this current crop of republicans. Pete Wilson isn't their problem, imo, although it is true he alienated some hispanics.

Whats odd is that the national media has no problems identifying the obvious issues with republicans in CA, but republicans here are in a state of denial about it themselves. Last election I remember hearing pundits on CNN ... "Californians don't like the social conservative agenda"... it really is pretty obvious.

The Dems realized in the late '80s that it was in their interests to oppose and subvert effective US border control. Their belief (which may ultimately prove to be wrong) was that every Hispanic that they could get across the southern border was another Democrat.

It's too late now. The only hope the GOP has regarding the Hispanic vote now is to court it. The Dems succeeded in their goal of greatly increasing the Hispanic voter population.

And Pete Wilson is NOT the man to court that vote.
