There is a big difference, I am sure lost on you, between relying on intelligence estimates, even when they are subject to some dispute, and taking partisan comments as evidence. Rockefeller is merely reflecting his reaction to events, not any special knowledge.

Neither you nor I are privy to all that goes into the intelligence reports, and have no independent way to critique them. Even those who are in a better position to dispute points only questioned some of the conclusions drawn, and were themselves often in a limited position to assess matters. Thus, the smart money was on our intelligence services, even admitting that there might be doubt about a few individual assertions.
