In fact, after the 1991 experience, Saddam had studiously avoided any confrontations with the US. But he was sitting on vast amounts of oil. Even if he had surrendered the last Iraqi catapult to the US, the invasion would still have taken place. The only way out would have been to say "abracadabra" and make all the oil vanish...

Not that simple. Al Qaeda has been shown to have ties to Saddam. If nothing else Saddam was paying the suicide bomber families in Israel. Stopping that is the first step to peace.
