Here's an excellent and succint comment on polling in the U.S....

I'll grant it's succinct... :o}

Let's use Gallup as an example. I've never found anything significant in their polling techniques, the phrasing of their questions, or their analysis that raised any suspicions on their integrity. Once in a while there's a question that I don't like the phrasing on, but no one is perfect.

After that they report the nubmers and they get pumped around the news circuit.

Half think Iraq was behind 9/11. That's what they think. I don't find that statistic favorable to the Administration. What do you want them [the polling orgs] to do? Not publish?

The only disadvantage of polling data is that people like to be in a majority...doesn't make much difference what that majority believes...as long as they are in the majority that gives them a comfy feeling. If a poll is published that Bush has a 65% approval rating ....there will be people who will approve of Bush purely because the poll says the majority approve.

I believe that happens. Is it lasting? As long as the approval rating is high. If it shifts to the negative, they'll jump on that bandwagon.

P.S. [That's what makes the phrase "Moral Majority" so successful. Are you moral? Of course! Are you in the majority! Of course the majority agrees with me!]
