Durex condom maker in buyout talks

SSL International says it's in preliminary talks with undisclosed firm; shares surge.
July 14, 2003: 8:58 AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's SSL International PLC, maker of Durex condoms, toiletries and rubber gloves, said Monday it was in preliminary talks with a potential bidder for the company, sending its shares surging upward.

SSL shares jumped 10 percent to 341-1/2 pence on news of the talks, their highest level for seven months to lift the firm's market value to £640 million, or $1.04 billion.

SSL did not name its suitor, but a newspaper reported Sunday that Reckitt Benckiser, the world's biggest household cleaning products firm, was considering bidding up to 330 pence per share for SSL.
