Machiavelli is one of those people who virtually nobody reads anymore but virtually everybody thinks they understand. Which they generally don't. It's like the Ugly American. The stereotype of the ugly American is a fat guy in a bermuda shorts who goes around insutliong the locals and being brash and inconsiderate, whereas in the book the ugly American was the good guy who really cared about the native populations. I wish people who pontificated about Machiavelli would stop to read him first.
