About 1/3 of CA's population is Hispanic! Ouch! Talk about a swing vote!
216.239.51.104

my big issue was the denial in 2001 that we were going down.
They acted on it too. After the bubble had burst in March 2000 and the market started down, state tax revenues also started declining. In spite of this, the state gov't continued increasing employment and spending.

And it might be argued that we didn't know 3/2000 was the top till considerably later.

Except:
We knew there had been a bubble. Anyone who knows the characteristics of bubble knows that that had BUBBLE! written all over it in flaming red letters. And that means extreme caution was in order. Bubbles invariably burst and the results are never pretty.

Instead we got spend-like-there's-no-tomorrow profligacy.

Who will lose the recall? The Republican Party. Why?

1) Davis will never let a Republican replace him, will resign first if the polls look bad, but first he will fight back, which he hasn't really begun to do. And Davis has a lot of money to fight. He's just saving it. He also has a lot of truth on his side which has not been heard yet.

2) Bustamante will become governor if Davis resigns. Or he could cut a deal where Dianne Feinstein runs against Arnold and the others and swamps them. Then Feinstein could appoint her own replacement. Maybe even Davis. Both Feinstein and Bustamante are probably a lock for two more terms.

3) Bustamante is the GOP's worst nightmare. He would unleash millions of previously non-existent Democratic Hispanic voters and make the male white vote irrelevant.

4) There are way too many Republicans in the race to unite around any one. And Arnold may be popular but he has no experience and a lot of skeletons in his closet. Riordan would make a good governor. But the others are all right-wing egomanics looking for a free ride. And they're the ones funding the recall.

Bottomline, the recall is a big waste of time. Bush will locse California in 2004 by at least 60-40, probably 65-35.
Everyone remembers who ripped us off in 2000 for 20 billion, the Houston energy companies, whose leader is Bush.

Also, Bush has much worse deficits than Davis on a per capita basis. Much worse. Therefore the GOP are total hypocrites if they attack Davis for his deficits.
