<<Am I getting too cynical? :-)>>

IMO it's impossible to be too cynical about the market. It was designed to help the big boys (banks, monied aristocracy, "captains" of industry, etc.) leverage their power and capital, and it does a very elegant job of it. Seems that the main purpose of the talking heads, and mainstream media in general, is misdirection - "Hey look over here!" - while the real deals are done behind doors that are far from transparent.

YOU'RE CHEATING! YOU'RE LOOKING BEHIND THE CURTAIN! :-)

Huh? :-)

However, in the '70s the gov't started manipulating ("improving") the contents of the basket to get the numbers they wanted.

True. However, these days it is rather more blatant. Highlighting a measure ("core inflation") that excludes such a basic cost item as energy is just too much. I mean, manipulated employment figures are public knowledge - anyone who looks into the footnotes can see the "adjustments". However, this time, they are promoting "core" data, very much like dot.coms promoted "pro-forma" earnings. It is pathetic that most of the market is swallowing it whole.

Am I getting too cynical? :-)

No, you are getting sweet. I could get used to this :-)
