So if Terry McAuliffe says that there will be no Democrats on the ballot, it has to be true. Right?

DNC Head Says No Dem. Will Replace Davis

LOS ANGELES - The chairman of the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) vowed Thursday that no Democrat will run to replace Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) if a Republican-led recall drive reaches the ballot.

Strategists from both parties believe the Democratic governor's chances of survival would be greater if no fellow members of his party appear on the ballot.

"So if you're a California voter and you want to vote to recall Gray Davis, you are not going to have an option but a bunch of right-wing conservatives on the ballot," DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe said.

Proponents of the recall hope the secretary of state will certify the effort as early as Wednesday. Backers say they have turned in more than 1.6 million signatures, nearly twice the amount needed for the measure to reach the ballot.

In a recall, voters would be asked first whether to oust Davis and then to choose a replacement from a list of candidates. Rep. Darrell Issa (news, bio, voting record), R-Calif., is the only declared candidate, but other potential Davis opponents include former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Davis has been battered by the state's energy crisis and budget deficit, sending his approval rating to record-low levels. He would become the first governor in California history to face a recall election if the effort qualifies for the ballot.

Some California Democratic lawmakers and party members in Washington have discussed uniting behind another Democrat if it appears Davis would lose a recall vote, as recent polls indicate he might.

McAuliffe sought Thursday to discount that scenario. "They're not going to have options," he said of California voters.

Now that Bush has a 500 billion/year deficit announced, can we all admit Grey Davis is a smalltimer when it comes to deficits and just let the guy alone to figure out the fiscal mess? The GOP are not ones to be talking about deficits now, especially since Bushies have been lying about them for a long time. The GOP was saying a 350 deficit and now it's 500 or more. Because the 450 and 475 estimnates do not even include the Iraq War costs.
