Hawk: Whatever you might know about the rest of the world, it is rare to see such an ill-informed survey of the strategic calculations of North Korea and China. I take it from your remarks that you have never encountered this part of the world or given it much thought.

Hawk, I'd say that Islamic Jihad and the USA have more in common [superstitious religious fervour] than Islamic Jihad and North Korea, although both Islamic Jihad and North Korea have the USA as a common enemy.

North Koreans and Islamic Jihad are about as far apart philosophically as I can imagine, except that both subscribe to autocracy, though I dare say that Saddam was another step higher in the autocratic stakes.

The chances of North Korea giving a nuke to Islamic Jihad are near zero. The chances of Pakistan giving a nuke to Islamic Jihad are high.

North Korea is so easy to handle. They aren't really a threat to the USA. China and South Korea and Japan have much more to worry about from them. They'll ensure North Korea stays in their cage. We shouldn't let a silly movie create paranoia.

I'm sure China must be stirring the North Koreans up to give the USA something to chew on. I would if I had the USA constantly threatening me, calling me a strategic competitor [all nations are strategic competitors] and rattling dirty great aircraft carrier fleets in my face.

Apart from Taiwan and internal human rights, China seems as benign as can be. They are working flat out to earn a living from exporting megatonnes of goods around the world. If the USA was less belligerent, I dare say China wouldn't be forced to react and the North Korean worries would be easily resolved by the economic integration of North and South Korea, with, of course, those amazing CDMA2000 phragmented photons bringing peace, light, harmony, happiness, health, longevity, prosperity, fun and love to a benighted nation.

I hasten to add I'm in favour of waving USS Ronald Raygun in Hu's face when he gazes across at Taiwan with megalomania in his mind. My taxes are paying a fair amount towards that and I'm okay with that. I hasten to add that I have seen all good stuff from Hu Jintao, so I'm hopeful that we have entered a great era of a generally peaceable world [vicious tribal fighting in local areas notwithstanding].
