Hi Michael, good post. Let me take a stab at some of your questions. And please forgive my punctuation errors, this Italian computer keyboard is difficult to work with.

there seems to be an element here who think that anyone who disagreed with this conflict is pro Saddam (reference your last paragraph above). It seems to be the easy way out of arguing questions of deception etc.

Those who see our present struggle as a failure are for the most part defenders of Saddams regime. The simple truth is, without our military engagement he would still be in power. He would still be torturing and killing the Iraqi people. To deny that reality, is to deny an obvious truth.

I would put it this way, if you wish to criticize an aspect of this military conflict, fine do so, but in every criticism there should be a recognition that a greater good has come out of all this. Some may view our engagement in this war as some sort of grand deception, but the fact is, its been extremely beneficial to mankind. Its freed millions of people and given them an opportunity to build a better future for their children. Its protected America from a tryant who, lets face it, was mad as hell. And whether you believe he was an imminent threat to America or not, he was dangerous to world peace, and he was a singular dangerous element in our struggle to rid the world of the building blocks to terrorist entities.

If we're in the business of liberating nations from torturous thugs committing civil rights atrocities why aren't the PNAC folks gearing up for Operation freedom in these nations?!?!? I guess these aren't sexy enough....throw these bones to that liberal nestbed instead, the UN.

Sexy has nothing to do with it. Only in Iraq did the combination of things come together in order to give us the impetus to act. A madman had the wealth and resources to build nuclear or biological weapons, he had shown he was willing to use them against those who opposed his reign of power, he had threatened a vital area of the world, he had threatened his neighbors, attacked a soverign nation, and created human atrocities against his own people. Ive said this before, but it bears repeating, it was the combination of these factors which forced us to act. That, combined with his unwillingness to disarm in accordance with U.N. mandates.

The rest of your post is simply political mudlinging and I wont get into the specifics of it. I will simply say this, we once supported Stalin and then turned against him. Our priorities in foreign policy change, and with that change, hopefully, comes a closer alignment with our values as a nation.
