China is increasingly anything but. While China still has a self-perpetuating ruling group, and that's typical of communist political systems, it's not really communism when the means of production are privately owned [increasingly]. I'm not sure what the word for it is, but there must be one. It is a single party state, which appoints those who run the show by a head count and the bloke at the top is there by virtue of a head count. It seems like the old Roman system - though I admit to a sketchy idea of history. I hadn't thought of the possibility of Japan seeing strategic advantage in Korean war. There's significant antipathy between Korea and Japan [more than a bit of friendly rivalry as between Oz and NZ]. It would perhaps be a good idea for Japan to be kept separate from Korea. Their security would be enhanced by having South Korea take over North Korea [in the short run anyway while the North is firing rockets, which could be noocular armed, over Japan]. Which would increase Japanese car sales as Korean production is destroyed in war. Also, Samsung's CDMA production would be hurt. Oh oh, this is getting personal! I think the USA should really stop messing around and rev up the UN into something which is suitable for the 21st century and get them onto North Korea [and Iraq - and, as Tony Blair said, sorting out some stability around Israel]. I'm glad to see increasing recognition that it's not in USA interests to play globocop and that some UN support for renovation in Iraq is a good idea. Now we need increasing recognition that the UN also needs renovation into a democratic institution [which means the likes of Saddam don't sit on WMD committees and France can't outvote India, Germany and Japan combined - by way of veto] Mqurice
