Chuck,
Using the indigenous will mean making concessions to shiites, kurds and other iraqi groups(expats incl) who wanted to move to elections earlier. It is risky business but I dont think there is much of a choice now. Also, some of those Rev Guard guys you talked about in an earlier post need not be dead enders. There are inducements that can be made by indiginys to bring them back under the umbrella. How about a South Africa type reconciliation commission where bad guys get to say "yes, i killed your family" but i have seen the light and anyway i was just following orders. I am not certain whether these rev guards were ever ideologues anyway, just opportunists. Having a day job and a pardon certainly beats blowing up trucks. Mike
PS In this scheme when do we dare let blue helmets replace some of our troops or perhaps NATO could do it. What I have learned is that US can win the war but become automatic targets during peacekeeping at which time blue helmets and nato may be preferable. We are starting pitcher , nato as middle relief and the UN as closer.
