Carl, I think I understand. You see the world in black or white. Totally. If there isn't total peace, it's war. If Iraq isn't Peoria, it's Vietnam. Actually Peoria probably isn't Peoria in your eyes, since it has a crime rate.

It's quite clear even from major media reports that a) the vast, vast majority of Iraqis are delighted to have Saddam gone, b) are glad we removed him, and c) are ok with us rebuilding the country so long as it's not permanent and we intend to leave, which naturally they have suspicions about, being humans and in the Middle East.

A very small percentage of Ba'athist bitter-enders, Arab pride/Islamist Iraqis, and imported fedayeen object violently to our presence and are trying to kill Americans in a sporadic and disorganized way. Our troops are waging counter-insurgency operations against them. Counter-insurgency operations have a very good chance of success when the majority of the population does not support the insurgents, as here.

So my opinion not changed very much. The "guerilla armies" running around Iraq - Uday's fedayeen - were there with Saddam's full approval, and some of them are still making trouble. I didn't know how many fedayeen were being imported last fall, now I do. Unlike some people, I alter my opinions to take new facts into account.
