The US bombed the embassy -- as for the why, it is not at all farfetched, as these things go US bombed the Chinese embassy by mistake. Any other construction is absurd. Your Chinese friends got to give you a hard time about it. The US paid China $30 million to get over the hurt feelings. And there was an investigation. The Chinese remained a little miffed because the US wouldn't publically hang a multitude of CIA types from the yard arm. Very unreasonable for them to have expected otherwise.
