The difference is that by participating in this forum we are not the "average" computer user. I will grant you that increasing numbers are getting to experience various aspects of change made possible by the machines - my only issue has been with the (mostly now defunct) starry eyed analysts whose productivity claims were far ahead of reality. I just retired from a line of work where I helped mid and larged sized organizations implement a certain class of productivity enhancing enterprise software; when marketing these solutions, the figures I would feel comfortable with tended much closer to 5% time savings annualized. Less than smoke breaks in other words. But still, its better than 0%. And certain related benefits come about from the overall enterprise use of the solution as well. I do agree with you in once sense for certain: these tools in certain hands are able to create things that were not possible 20 years ago, that much is true. My only bone to pick is that productivity improvement is frequently over-estimated and I also question in many cases the implementation costing done.
