One judges the handling by the end result. I'd say the Bush administration has handled the proclivity for stupidity and treason cue opinions of the dems masterfully.

A portion of their base will not allow the candidates to be what they need to be in order to get elected, and that is being "hawks". They split hairs, and decide to go down on the opposite side of the fence of their opponent, which is an unelectable position in 2004.

I think that Lieberman is the only one who is remotely in the right area on this, and his chances do not appear to be that strong. That shows how far to the left the vocal part of their party has moved. Kerry's military service does not qualify him as a "hawk"...
