It's big business. Just go to Google and type in "lose weight" if you dare (over 2 million hits). The price of higher food productivity, lots of cheap food with almost zero nutritional value. People over eat precisely because the food they eat doesn't have what their body needs because almost all food in this country is grown in mineral depleted soils (even that high priced organic stuff). Obesity isn't the only result, there are scores of diseases which are a direct result of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Don't get me started.

The thing to understand is that everything, every technological progress is equal parts pleasure and pain. No one lives any better in any era than in any other era even while there is a huge discrepancy from one place on the planet to another. Who is to say spending the entire day plowing behind a draft horse is worse than spending 10 hours trying to repair your Windows installation? Sometimes I'd rather be behind the horse. But this doesn't keep us from trying to improve our existence and it is the struggle to improve our existence which gives people purpose (other than their personal relationship with God and family).
