Many of the losers are better off fleeing the country. Many used public sympathy in the US to come to America -- and who can blame them if they were in cohoots with the US? The boat people risked their lives to escape. Conditions for them were terrible in the years following the war. They fought on a losing side. They paid a price for that. The US had a civil war as well. Fortunately, our civil war did not end with foreigners invading our country and gaining political control. The losers in our civil war did not like the outcome -- there are losers in a civil war. I deal with people from all walks of life and in both the north and the south. They are now free from foreign domination -- and their freedom matters to them as much as your freedom matters to you. The United States had to fight to free itself from foreign rule, and, with the help of the French, achieved that goal. So did the Vietnamese, with the help of the Russians. Now they are free. They like being free. They are extremely proud of being Vietnamese. They are proud of Vietnam and they are extremely busy working towards a better life in the future. I do not know many Vietnamese who would freely choose the US over Vietnam as a place to live. The North is, for the most part, more interesting to visit -- more cultural in character, more gentle and happy people, more smiles. The south is more commercial, hectic and you see fewer smiles -- a bustling place with so many people rushing about their business. The country is extremely young -- with a very low average age. The vast majority of the population has been born since 1975, and has only an indirect knowledge of the war. It is a beautiful country -- vibrant, young and very, very busy with people making a better life for themselves. Your description betrays your lack of knowledge of Vietnam today.
