Vietnam marks France's
humiliating defeat at Dien Bien Phu

Vietnam has marked the 49th anniversary of the decisive battle of Dien Bien Phu.

Dien Bien Phu also is seen by many military scholars as one of the great battles of the 20th century and a defining moment in the history of Southeast Asia.

Ahead of next year's 50th anniversary celebrations, the Vietnam Communist Party's elite Central Committee has instructed improvements to cater for large numbers of people expected to fly in.
