Talking about Buddhists, and of course completely unrelated to the topic of this thread, let me recommend a book:

The Skull Mantra
by Eliot Pattison

amazon.com

I picked this book up by chance two years ago in summer, while going through 1-2 books per week, waiting for my Carte de Sejour Monegasque on the Monte-Carlo beach with a glass of white wine in my hand, watching the markets crumble.

I thought it was just some detective novel and was pleasantly surprised - it is a detective novel that starts with the death of an inmate in a work camp set in Tibet, but is thoroughly infused with the Tibetan culture, myths, mysteries, mindset, etc. It is the story of a Chinese detective who gets thrown into this camp (indefinitely) after pissing off some officials in Pekin, and is gradually assimilated into the Tibetan way of life and mindset.

This book is like Shibumi - a deep & insightful look into a culture, thinly disguised as a detective novel.

Its sequels are also very good, too - Water Touching Stone and Bone Mountain.
