A couple of reasons,

- the hatred among the last generation will not and should not always existed in the next generation;
- Japanese cars, relatively speaking, give less trouble. All the cars I have owned here are Japanese ones, save me money in a long run.
- One can both hate what the Japanese had done to Chinese and to other Asian countries during WWII, and buy their staff, that is called pragmatic<g>
- A lot of older Chinese and a few young ones still do not like to buy Japanese goods.

BTW, actually, VW Jetta is the #1 sold car in China, Toyota and other Japanese companies are sort of late for the game.
