Is it not possible- -probable, even- -that Lenin and Pot actually did believe that Socialist Man could be built and Communism, as a result of proper education and environment, was achievable, and that "From each according to ability, to each according to need" could work?

You might have to break a few eggs (or a few million) along the way, but the capitalism of Marx's day was no joy, either. Marx's real failure was in believing capitalism was really stuck at that point and could not evolve past it in a democratic system.
