...but where have he and everybody else been all these years?

As my thinking on this has evolved, I've become increasingly annoyed that no one was fussing about how "God's plan for marriage and family" has long since been abused and ignored. We didn't hear from the Pope when people married for money or married for Social Security benefits or health benefits or a green card or married to unite warring countries, none of which have anything to do with "God's plan." It's only when gays want to participate in making formal family commitments that there's all this outrage. Marriage has been on a slippery slope for a long time. The gay thing is just the last outrage so choosing this place to take a stand makes the tone of much of what I'm hearing sound less about protecting the true meaning of marriage than just plain bigoted, to my ear.

I remember a lot of fuss when divorce was made easy. I don't remember anyone ever suggesting a Constitutional amendment to prevent sham marriages or to prohibit people from producing kids outside of marriage.
