First of all this Pope wasn't pope when those things happened. Also the church has talked all along about how marriage is sacred. I'm sure some of the opponents of gay marriage, both within and outside of the Roman Catholic church are bigoted but the church has real and consistent religious and traditional reasons to be against gay marriage.

there's all this outrage

I haven't seen much of that. I mostly see amusement, bemusement, rolling of eyes, and yawning.

Aren't civil unions already recognized? Why push it?

If the pope wants marriage straight, he should make sure Catholic marriage is straight. Bur we are a secular country, and religious demands should be meaningless as regards our laws, and pieces of paper- like a marriage license. I hope we wouldn't listen to the pope if he said homosexuals shouldn't get licenses for their dogs, and I think his pronouncement on marriage should be just as meaningless to the civil authorities (Catholics can enshrine his words in their hearts as much as they want, just don't inflict the pope on people who don't give a fig for what he has to say. He's just another guy in a funny outfit as far as I'm concerned.)
