"I don't recall them ever making an issue of "sham" marriages." There is a lot of talk about what marriage represents (in the traditional sense). The problem is, that the reality of what we are living with (for a large percentage of Americans) has little or no baring these traditional foundations of marriage. So, when the same people object to gay unions, they/we come accross as hypocritical. Time for the traditionals to "straighten up" and walk their talk or shut up. I agree the pope is doing his job. His community is not. You Catholics need to fire him or follow him.

So do you propose torturing people to find out what their motive is? Really, there is little the Pope can do except extol the sanctity of marriage. Indeed, one cannot get married by a priest in this country, and, I suspect, others, without pre- nuptial counseling to ensure that the parties understand what is expected, so I would say that they are doing their bit for well- grounded marriage. It is non- issue, and has no bearing on the question of homosexual unions.......

They haven't been as outspoken on the issue but they have always been against fake marriages. Other factors - 1 - Its harder to tell if a marriage is fake then it is to tell that it is homosexual. 2 - In opposing homosexual marriage the church is defending a wide spread and long lasting tradition (that marriage is between a man and a woman). That marriage is a serious monogamous commitment between partners for love and child raising has never been completely true. Even in places and times when you couldn't get a divorce, a lot of marriages where for political reasons, and/or where just shams for one reason or another. Tim
