I was wondering that perhaps it is possible that manufacturing may become - and eventually will be likely to become - only a minor part of the overall economy. The amount of widgets we need is not infinite. Yes, we'll need to work, but most jobs will not be in manufacturing. Maybe the Chinese are helping us to get used to the brave new world of "Post-Manufacturing".

Could be that the Chinese are even more vulnerable than we are to what may happen when the music stops. They are building up huge capacity which may quite suddenly go unused if something goes wrong with our relationship - or with their willingness to take our paper.
