I take your point just as I did when Tim made it, but I think you are too glib about it. The distinction matters little when you are the one outside looking in. It feels the same either way.

I remember a couple of decades ago when health clubs became popular and they offered couples membership at the same price as singles. I'm sorry, but if I'm spinning my treadmill at twice the monthly fee of the party on the next treadmill, who happens to be married, I don't give a damn whether they were being actively included or I was being actively excluded. It feels just as unfair either way.
