My first job out of college 33 years ago was as a youth probation officer. After I had been there about 15 months, a male worker was hired at a higher salary than I was making. When I questioned this, I was told that "he was a man and had a family to support." He had used the man's year experience in the Army to justify the higher pay level to the Board (which still should have only placed him at my level). I have never forgotten the helpless anger I felt at that conversation. My boss, a very nice, but horrendously paternalistic type, couldn't understand why I was upset. It was perfectly logical to him.
You are so right about "looking in".

I just realized I posted to you a post that was supposed to go to CH. But I guess he will find it. That's what comes of rushing.
So if you are wondering why I said you were against normalization, that should explain it.
That I am losing my mind is the other explanation.

Gosh. With that attitude, you must be feeling excluded from this or that almost every day of your life. Two people can rent a motel room for the same price as one -- heck, you're paying double for your pillow and towel. Kids fly free--you're paying double. Three people can rent a car for the same price as one -- gosh, you're paying TRIPLE for those miles you drive. Same with taxis -- every time you see a couple getting into a taxi and realize that they're only paying the same rate you would pay for the same ride it must make your blood boil. Senior discounts -- don't even TALK about those.

Of course, you do benefit in other ways, such as cheaper car insurance and lower life insurance rates, so you have inclusions as well as exclusions. And on, and on, and on . . .

I would go nuts if I started thinking that every benefit somebody else gets is a slap in my face excluding me.

"It feels just as unfair either way."

It appears that you are basing your complaint on an absolute principle "fairness". Of course couples have their view point on what would be fair given their circumstances as well. In order for one view point to consider with respect the view point of the other, there has to be some internal conscience regarding the bigger picture (both view points). When persons of principle have no conscience regarding the situations of others, oppression is the rule of the day...would you agree that principle minus conscience equals extremism?
