China works with Derry

05 August 2003
A TEAM of budding scientists from Co Derry have teamed up with Chinese students to path the way for future Internet security.

A new £30,000 project will see students from the Coleraine campus of the University of Ulster working with scientists from Xiamen University in the Fujian province of China.

The research will form part of a wider international initiative linking the UK-based Royal Society with China's National Research Agencies.

Commenting on demand for new research into Internet security, UU Professor and project leader Gerard Parr said,

"Existing data encryption technology is inadeqaute to meet the needs of the new generation of broadband Internet.

"We will be working to develop new kinds of encryption that will allow secure transmission of sensitive data - for example, financial information, patient medical records, and military and law enforcement intelligence- over the Internet."
