Larry, Its either on Si here or iHub, but there is a thread
where folks build their own pc. While you may not want to,
they most likely know the best places to get individual parts
that may include a box with those items you only want included
so that you need not build anything except what you already
have to add on.

I'am not sure what this web site is used for.
parts.emachines.com

Its from the home page: emachines.com

I planned on buying for $500 an eMachine from Wal-Mart,
that includes a monitor, I have second thoughts now as I
express them in the following post.

Low Cost PCs... Larry, The following is a learning area for me
to uncover the different operating systems beside Windows.

Not to confuse myself too much, but i believe that us talking
about personal computers, the hardware for 99.99% of us
is either Steve Job's Apple, or the IBM/Intel chip set, mother board
or whatever one wants to call the architecture of the electronics
that actually carry out the instructions of the software.

The URL below is into Wal-Mart.com and i believe these items
are not available in stores, buy only through their web site that
will have them shipped to your location. It was a few months
ago that i noticed these and i remember that i was able to go
to the manufacture's web site directly and bypass Wal-Mart
completely, but it seemed it cost more that way. But i now
remember they sold their hardware without any OS loaded
for a reduced price. Anyway, i plan on buying the complete
pc at Wal-Mart (monitor included) like the eMachine for $499
that has Windows XP loaded, and then i'll save everything
to CDs with backups of the backups :o) and reformat
the hard drive and reload everything, and once everything works
as initially out of the box i will make that single hard drive into
two seperate boot'able drives like i have on my current pc
and load Windows XP on the default boot one and Lindows
onto the second. Actually i'll make a very small third partition
that boot'able and load that $99 Coherent Unix i now have on
my second boot'able hard drive... but then i might as well go
NUTsssssssss and make a fourth one and load Windows 3.1
of my current pc.

Larry,
.
If i remember correctly reading todays post here,
you completed your task very good in buying...
.
... want a cheap computer for second puter.
Celeron 1500+ or good AMD,
20 gig HD, 256 Sdram or 128 DDRam,
no monitor or keyboard or mouse.
internet connection, cd rom
... like to pay less that $200
.
Gottfried replied to my mention of a magazine article,
that rated eMachines very low, in that his old one worked well.
While i did find the url to that article, which rated lots of areas,
i did remember reading a few months ago on ZDNet that they
rated eMachines as a good buy, especially at the cheapo end.
.
That article rated Dell A+ and ABS A, and a quick glance at the
Dell web site showed the cheapest at about $800, and the ABS
web site at about a $700 range. No sure now if it included a monitor.
.
For myself i'am quite sure a Wal-Mart $499 eMachine w/ monitor
and a read & write CD and 128 memory will be fine for my web surfing.
.
The Wal-Mart 1 or 2 week return policy will allow me enough time
to run the machine hard to see if its a lemon or has a weak part.
.
On abspc.com is the pc magazine article,
pcmag.com
.
also, on the above ABS pc web site i found,
.
