Your charter observations are certainly valid ones...
Trudeau's Charter was an irreconcialable break with Parliamentary supremacy, wholly in keeping with his utter disdain for Parliament.

Did the Canadian electorate have an opportunity to pass judgement on the Charter before it was enacted? No. Was there a comprehensive debate on the implications of the Charter? No. Did Canadians vote to give appointed judges the power to remake Canadian society? No.

I posted the following opinion here 3 years ago in answer to an individuals (Master) support of the charter (bold text).
Recent court activism has only strengthened my opinion:

The Charter of Rights was a noble idea which was intended to give all citizens the freedom and equality to attain whatever aspirations they chose and thereby fulfill their potential.

Now we’re getting somewhere. The Charter was a pure political document. Its purpose was a nothing more than an idea whose main purpose was to get certain social manipulators a place in the history books. It was not well thought out, well written or well intentioned. You fail to say how the citizens were prohibited in reaching their potential without it. Equality???? We were equal before the charter, now we are categorized in groups, some equal and some more equal than others.

Unfortunately, certain groups have taken possession of this document and turned it against the better interests of society.

Didn’t you say all citizens? Now you seem to think some should not have been included. Or, perhaps you think some would have been expected to use common sense and not pursue their selfish interests? Common sense…what a concept!!!!!! Do you think we would need the Charter if we had common sense?? Trudeau told you to your face you had no common sense and you bought it……perhaps he was right in certain instances. Should the charter be amended to say “………except for the groups that Master finds in poor taste”?

Ultimately, it is not bombs that will destroy us but rather it is the Charter itself.

If true, how can you admire someone for inflicting such an Armageddon on your country? Would it not be a true picture of Trudeau if we taught the truth about his selfish stupidity to our youth. Would it not be better for the next generations if they were taught that this is the sort of thing that can happen to a free country if idiots are left to do the thinking and inflict their self-serving ideology on the citizenry? Don’t the children deserve the truth?

The Charter has bankrupt this country, both economically and, as you say, morally. The damages are incalculable. Unfortunately, to date, we haven’t had a government with the balls to throw the damn thing out and return the country to its people. We just bend over an let them ram more taxes into us to keep funding the manipulations, court cases, human rights inquiries, outrageous settlements ( why is it that if feelings have been hurt, money is the best cure?) and more rules and regulation to compound the damage done by rules and regulations. Why has the liberal government refused to give us rhe right to own property??? Why have they refused to give us a taxpayers rights bill??? Why have they refused to give us the right to think for ourselves???

I defy you to honestly weight the costs versus the benefits of the Charter (and whining that my only concern is the financial costs won’t wash because the charter rewards hurt with MY money). Total the costs of the court system, including the criminals on the street at this moment because of court backlogs, tribunals and kangaroo courts, the cost of implementing the metric system (I still haven’t heard a single viable benefit of this bastardization of a part of our history) and…………well, it’s a long list.

Our youth……take the percentage of the debt, with the accumulated interest, that is attributable to the Charter from the debt we are passing on to our children and their children, and see the improvement in their country’s ability to compete globally. Take the proportionate decrease in taxes from the next generations and see if that slows the “brain drain” to our southerly neighbor.

The charter has been used by liberal politicians to shirk their duties and insult the majority. It has been used as an excuse for chickenshit liberals to hide from popular opinion.

The Charter should be printed on toilet paper and hence, finally be put to good use.

<<Did Canadians vote>>
or
the intelligentsia

I object to your characterization of Eastern voters as intelligentsia. I pointed out the Canadian Election result breakdown. Your are assuming that everyone in Eastern Canada must be intelligent because they don't vote for the Reform/Allliance, that may not be the only reason.

Perhaps the Canadian voters are just suspicious and the Reform/Alliance policies just need time to infiltrate.

Alliance policies
or
Early Reform oustings

I have considered several reasons for the lack of Alliance support in eastern Canada. Kastel mentioned that the visceral reaction of voters is likely an important factor, I do not disagree with this.
The Alliance policy itself is the primary problem, this is what I believe.
Tolerance for a diversity of political and societal views is the hallmark of Canadian politics, with a catch. The decision of the RCMP to charge David Ahenakew under Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Canada is a case in point. When it comes to men like Ahenakew, Keegstra and Zundel, you are correct, I have no tolerance for their diversity.

Do Canadians express what they feel by voting, yes, do Canadians in eastern Canada vote for the Alliance, no. Blame who you want, Trudeau and Atkinson may be entirely to blame for the Alliance performance, I suspect it might be the planks.
