Good grief. It never occurred to me that you had or ever would treat a gay badly. I can't imagine where you got that idea. All I'm saying is that the message that gay is deviant and inferior is fodder for those who would. You may not have a personal audience of people who would act badly on those cues, but the congressmen who are proposing constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage certainly do. To the extent that you affiliate with them, you are part of the problem, or at the very least not part of the solution. We are all defined to some extent by the company we keep, both personally and ideologically. There was a time when I would never have uttered that I favored states rights out of concern that I was indirectly supporting some really bad stuff. It's all well and good if you and I make exquisite distinctions as we carve out our positions. For most people, and on the broad political landscape, yer either fer us or agin us.
