French minister of defense, Michele Alliot-Marie urged Europeans, in a interview with Le Monde, to resist what she called an American "economic war". She also accused US secretary of state Donald Rumsfeld of American supremacism.

"The French minister is entitled to have her own opinion. However her opinion does not accurately characterise the policy or position of the secretary of defence or the position of the US government."

<But U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns, who discussed Iraq with Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov, remained non-committal on the proposal for a new resolution when he spoke at a joint news conference. Asked to clarify U.S. policy, he declined to comment directly on Ivanov's proposal. He spoke only of building on resolution 1483, adopted by the Security Council in May, which ends economic sanctions on Iraq, sets out U.N. responsibilities there and supports an Iraqi-run transitional administration....''We talked about reconstruction. This is a subject in which Russia and Russian companies have a real interest,'' Burns said, adding that talks would continue in the future.
