Saddam had been running Iraq fo over 25 years, and during that time, Iraq has been second only to Saudi Arabia in terms of oil in the ground. We did not have to rush in to Iraq to prevent a national security threat from oil.

That's because he wasn't going around invading Kuwait and threatening to invade Saudia Arabia. Before the fall of the Shah, Iran balanced Iraq's regional ambitions. After the fall of the Shah, Iraq and Iran were plenty preoccupied with each other for awhile. Then, he turned his attention to his Sunni neighbors. Think it's merely a testament to Bush Sr.'s diplomatic skills that the Gulf Arabs joined the Coalition in GWI? The sheikhs are very jealous of their independence. Saddam saw himself as the reincarnation of Salahdin.
