That Gulf air tends to travel up the Mississippi Valley when there's a low up north. Then it flows to the east. The general weather travel is west to east. Kansas tends to be extra dry because the Rocky Mountains generally knock a lot of the moisture out of the air headed to Kansas and there isn't a place for the dry air to pick any moisture.

As I recall Western Kansas is a whole lot drier than Eastern Kansas.
