Well, I do only know Fred Reed via email, I didn't know him when we were kids. He's probably some five years older than me, and Arlington wasn't small enough that you'd have known everyone. But in addition to being a great ranter, he's a wonderfully evocative writer, and I've corresponded with him about growing up in northern Virginia in those days. It's been hot as hell here in SoCal the last few days. I had a bit of heat stroke yesterday. Anyone with sense wouldn't be hiking in 100 degree heat with a 25 lb satchel dangling on their shoulder. But then that's why they pay me to do it.
