An inelegant phrase to be sure. Sort of a sow's ear kind of description- that was an aphorism which always made me cringe. Why would you WANT to make a purse out of an ear. I think that explanation was given in an interview where language tends to be less formal than when it is gussied up and wearing its best on the printed page. He may have said it more attractively somewhere in his writing. Although really my gut is one of my best advisors. Much more reliable than my heart.
