One of the interesting things about the SI experience is to see how people are alike and different. I have always found Neo particularly interesting in that regard because we are at the same time so alike and so utterly different. The difference of greatest interest to me is our view of the role of the individual in society. In my view, individuals make choices in the marketplace of ideas and behaviors based on whatever makes sense to them and society is the net result of all those individual choices. Neo's society is by design with individuals conforming to a set of rules (preferably the set of Rules According to Neo, it would seem <g>). We might as well be from different planets in that regard. I used to subscribe to the command and control approach, but that was a long time ago.

I sometimes enjoy my time on SI, sometimes not. My transient feelings are less important to me than my underlying motives and attachments. I love being a father, but it is not a constant joy. How could it be? Sometimes I am fearful, sometimes disappointed, sometimes frustrated, sometimes ashamed, all manner of feelings, but also hopeful, satisfied, at ease, and proud. The good and bad are both parts of caring about something a lot. If you find that foreign to you, well, we really are on different planets.......
