We traded with Saddam under the UN sanctions which provided for humanitarian aid (although it doesn't seem to have gotten where it was supposed to. Duh).

The French and others seem to have traded in the black market, in violation of the sanctions. Some countries shipped ammunition that was used to shoot at our troops; documented fact.

Saddam wasn't our "buddy" when he was gassing the Kurds, and even if he was at one time someone who we tolerated, so what?

You and others with that pov seem to be arguing that if a good person commits a crime, we shouldn't prosecute it because s/he's generally (or was once) good. Doesn't work that way.
