Is this the way to run and keep a democracy? Sure doesn't appear to be to me.

I'm not sure if that's how to run and keep a democracy, but what's certainly not Constitutional is expecting me to foot the bill for millions of strangers' kids to learn to read. I'll take care of my own, and a market will have to fend for the rest. I bristle not only at the economic implications, but at the thought of the State, monolith of incompetence, being charged with such a sensitive duty.

You don't even understand that this country was not founded as a democracy but as a Constitutional Republic and I bet you don't even know the difference. A democracy is the tyranny of the majority and a Constitutional Republic is the rights of the individual over the rights of the state, or majority. In a CR the majority cannot tell an individual what to do, in a democracy it can.
