The idea of a corporation is to create a separate legal entity. That way if for instance you owned Enron you would not be liable for that company's debts. That is why dividends are taxed, it is just another transfer of wealth from one entity to another. So taxing them is not irrational or stupid. Its just not fun for the shareholder.
