Isn't the opteron a 64 bit processor? INTC hasn't brought out a 64 bit chip. The problem is do you invest in AMD long term or short term? Short term, there is the buzz from the new chip, but they are not making money and the new chip will take a while to ramp up, get designed in, and benefit from production levels of the new designs. Long term, INTC will compete and AMD hasn't been able to. The chips need to be moved along the Moore's Law roadmap to keep increasing the processor speed. INTC has a track record here and AMD doesn't.

Crap shoot both long and short term. Exciting if you like to gamble.

Don't invest in chips until you figure out which compete with which and how they are doing. The P's, if long in the tooth, are so because no competition is nudging them ahead.
