Well of course it can turn on a dime... it can even sink to, say, 600. But so what ? Does that mean the s&P has no investment merit ? Does that mean it should be shunned in favour of cash ? What does history say of relative investment merit ?

As long as the S&P index funds et al in all those 401k's out there are returning 12 - 15 percent per quarter nothing is going to change.....once John Q. Public sees his index funds going negative, then a sea change will happen. Bummer is for the 401k guys is where do they put their money? Cash? (that should get tyke going!<g>) Most 401k's do not offer a PM fund....

Sure glad my 401k is now an IRA....
