In the RRSP, you can buy calls or sell covered calls only. Canadian Income Tax rules only allow calls to be bought and sold in RRSPs and RRIFs. You are also not allowed short positions in RRSPs and I think the authorities think that Puts are effectively shorts.
It is not your brokerage firm making the rules.

Regarding stocks , did you see Birim Gold BGI.TO make a new high today on big volume. My favourite BHK.TO was also up today even with a falling gold price. Add in too FM.TO making a new high, I've had a good day.
