Electorally, it is almost impossible for a liberal Democrat to gain the Presidency, and pretty hard in most states and districts. Those who are liberal are on the spot to prove that they are not too out of step with the electorate. Apart from creating some problems with the nominating process, and with the writing of the platform, the McGovernite revolution has not lasted. Carter was elected as a moderate Democrat, as was Clinton. It is doubtful that either would have been elected had they not been Southern Baptists. I noticed, for example, that if Bush pere had held onto Evangelicals at the same percentage as Reagan, he would have won. Also, if blacks voted Republican at the same percentage as Hispanics, it is doubtful that another Democrat would be elected President for the foreseeable future......
