The level of noise accompanying the fine point you are attempting to make is and has been vastly overdone. The Bush administration was convinced that the Regime of Saddam Hussein posed a serious threat. Most people at the time were convinced of this as well. Since then most people have learned, to a much greater extent, just how heinously brutal the regime is. Most people are happy that Saddam's heinously brutal regime has been defeated. Of course the issue of Iraq is much broader than simply the presence of WMD or not. Most people are reasonable enough to see that, and the petty partisanship of trying to make more of the famous “16 words” than they are worth. The left wing is becoming increasingly insignificant as this barrage of irrelevance continues to be shoved in everyone’s face.

You might want to start paying attention to the ground swell of conservatism coming from the non-party faithful…youth, non-affiliated adults, etc. It is tremendous and; it is a direct reaction to the picayunish barrage of pettiness from the left. If you are interested in rescuing what is left of the crumbling Democratic party, you might want to start shining your light on some liberal virtues, and platforms instead…just a thought.
